In the "manga" he asks, "Does she still sleep sprawled all over the bed?" This is a fine example of much they've changed in the television version of this series. Another thing is Shinji, Misato, and the the other two big-eyed kids weren't even on that ship when the Angel atacked. Asuka took care of it all by herself with ease.

well they've made mistakes like that before, like when fighting Zeruel, he was in his normal clothes, but when he was absorbed, the only thing left was his plug suit. They may have made the same mistake then as well. Theoretically, the plug-suit is supposed to act as a catylist between your nerves and thoughts to get better synchronization. Also it's to monitor health readings and to provide remote emergency care when necessary like diffibrulation.
